Functionality of Inconel alloy in the various media

Alkalies: Inconel alloy is the recommended material for handling ammonium hydroxide service or for elevated temperature applications that need resistance to sulfur corrosion. Inconel alloy is utilized to handle the alkaline sulfur solutions that are utilized in the production of sulfate or kraft paper. Inconel is fully resistant to ammonia solutions at the whole concentrations and temperature ranges.

Salts: Inconel alloy offers enhanced resistance to several neutral and alkaline salts and to acid salts. Hypochlorites are fully corrosive to the material. Inconel alloy is not influenced by the alkaline solutions comprising of hydrogen peroxide. It is one of the rare materials suitable for using in the hot, powerful solutions of magnesium chloride. When fully submerged, the alloy has been utilized for the parts as tubes in magnesium chloride evaporators and steam coils in the open concentrators. Inconel alloy has been utilized in contact with nitrosyl chloride at room to above temperature up to 120oF. It offers excellent resistance to oxidizing acid salts, it is superior to Monel. Inconel alloy is not resistant to solutions that comprise significant magnitudes of the salts like ferric chloride, cupric chloride, and mercuric chloride. It is eventually remain unaffected by silver nitrate solutions. It is used in silver salts in the production photographic materials and for layer processing device, Inconel alloy offers good resistance for chromates, dichromates, permanganates, nitrates and nitrites.

Chlorine and HCl: Inconel is unaffected by dry chlorine or dry HCl at the room temperatures. The condensate from wet chlorine or wet HCl is corrosive to Inconel alloy. At the temperatures more than dew point, rates in wet gas are the same as those in dry gas. Among the common metal, Inconel with Nickel alloy 200 has the maximum permissible application temperatures and is the recommended material for applications where sulfur may be available.
