About 316L Stainless Steel
316 Stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel alloy steel providing great resistance to chloride ion pitting attack and general corrosion. Enhanced high temperature strength. Stress and pitting corrosion resistance to a variety of chemicals. An austenitic structure also provides good hardness below cryogenic limits.
Grade 316Lis a lower carbon grade of SS 316 that reduces harmful carbide precipitation while welding. 316/316l is non-hardenable by heat processing. Presence of molybdenum offers SS 316L better corrosion resistance potential than grade 316, specifically improved pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in the chloride conditions. Resistance to stress corrosion cracking above 60oC. Prevention of corrosion by chloride based potable water at room temperatures. This steel has poor resistance to hot sea water.
Suitable oxidation resistance in regular service up to 925oC whilst in irregular service up to 870oC. SS 316 is not preferred for use in the aqueous corrosion based applications including temperatures up to 860oC. However grade 316L better prevents carbide precipitation and is preferred for use in the higher temperatures.

Paper, textile and photographic sectors, chemical equipments, digesters, tanks, evaporators, pulp, paper and fabric processing system, components used in marine conditions, tubes, heat exchangers, jet engine components, architectural operations in vigorous sites, food processing in chloride conditions, mining and medical implants. Widely used on industrial scale in welding applications.
Processing of Stainless Steel Grade 316/316l
Annealing up to 1900 to 2100oF or 1038 to 1149oC then cooled quickly. High functional Grade 316/316l is easily formed and drawn. But thermal processing cannot be implemented to harden this steel grade. It can be normally welded by ordinary fusion and resistance methods. Care should be taken to prevent weld hot cracking by the confirmed production of ferrite on the weld material. Oxyacetyle welding technique is not recommended for grade 316/316l.
Quick machining results into hardening of the steel. Therefore slow speeds and regular feed rates are suggested.
